Talàn is a guitar recording made by Raphael Rogiński at Studio Pinokio and W Dobrym Tonie Studio in Warsaw, Poland in the year 2022. The tape is a spontaneous collaboration between Samling and Polish label Instant Classic. There is also an LP version of Talàn in the works. The initial alliance between Samling and Raphael Rogiński stemmed from an event Samling hosted in Rotterdam, featuring the Żywizna project, a momentous collaboration between Raphael and singer Genowefa Lenarcik.
Rogiński’s multifaceted style spans various genres and styles, but dare we say is, on the whole, characterized by a confrontationally up-close—yet respectfully distant—studious exploration. It is highly unlike instrumental studies of its kind, it takes a step aside and runs parallel to the standard virtuoso musician approach: it is denser, and preoccupied with something more cosmic than the sound of strings. Navigating the fine line between sounding like an instrument and sounding like moving flesh, the guitar and the body merge in a coiled dance where they cannot be told apart. The result often evokes a contradictory sense of euphoric melancholia.
A boundedness to the sound, like an enveloping cocoon, can perhaps be attributed to Rogiński’s attraction to and interest in the Black Sea. In Talàn we hear a strange balancing act, like something gracefully rolling down a hill. Listening, carefully, is as if looking at it from a distance: is it a creature? It’s definitely alive. But alive like water. Or eddies in the wind. The eight songs, dedicated to the Black Sea, rise and fall like waves in the wind.
The melodies and their spasms feel like an evolutionary search. The recording is dry and warm. The result is embracing and leaving you empty.
This tape is a limited edition of 200, transparent case, transparent purple tape, laser-printed violet ink on silver paper jacket.
